It was a remarkable journey for Australia, who began their campaign with back-to-back defeats yet still finished with the 50-overs World Cup in their arms for the sixth time. Shakib had already caused controversy over his appeal that led to Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews becoming the first player in international cricket to be 'timed-out'. Cummins, for one, had no doubts about the stature of the original World Cup. "I think it's the pinnacle of international cricket," said Cummins, who was part of Australia's victorious 2015 squad. "The whole cricket world stops with this World Cup."

DHARAMSALA, India, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Opener Dawid Malan smashed 140 and forged century-plus partnerships with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root to help England rack up 364-9 against Bangladesh in their second match of the 50-overs World Cup on Tuesday. Malan combined with Bairstow in a 115-run opening stand to give England a terrific start after being put into bat by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. Even after Bairstow departed for 52, there was no respite for Bangladesh as Malan raised 151 runs with Root, whose 82 followed his 77 in the tournament opener against New Zealand. Sept 1 (Reuters) - Mahendra Singh Dhoni is known to have a keen eye for talent and the match-winning display by Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana against Bangladesh at the Asia Cup on Thursday shows the former India captain's reputation is well earned. His Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Dhoni predicted in May the 20-year-old would prove a "great asset" for Sri Lanka provided he was used sparingly and only in key white-ball tournaments. Vindicating his Chennai captain, Pathirana claimed a career-best 4-32 to rout Bangladesh and set up Sri Lanka's five-wicket victory with 11 overs to spare at Pallekele. "I think this performance has been coming for a while now," Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood told reporters. "Easy to see why Sri Lanka Cricket, CSK and MS Dhoni are valuing Matheesha Pathirana so highly," former West Indies bowler Ian Bishop wrote on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter.

Rahul hails 'phenomenal' Iyer as Shakib rues missed chances
  + stars: | 2022-12-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
DHAKA, Dec 25 (Reuters) - India's stand-in captain KL Rahul heaped praise on middle order batsman Shreyas Iyer after their thrilling victory in the second test against Bangladesh while home captain Shakib Al Hasan was left to rue missed opportunities. However, Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin then forged an unbroken 71-run stand to frustrate Bangladesh and pull off a thrilling victory for the tourists. Mehidy Hasan (5-63) and Shakib (2-50) wreaked havoc with the ball, but Iyer gave a spin masterclass to secure India's victory. That proved a costly mistake in the end, but the hosts had also missed four chances in India's first innings. "It is slightly disappointing, as other teams don't miss the chances that we are missing," said Bangladesh captain Shakib.
India moved to top of Group 2 with six points, one ahead of South Africa who have played one game fewer. Litton gave Bangladesh a rollicking start scoring 56 of his team’s 60 runs in the first six powerplay overs. He raced to a 21-ball fifty before rain halted play with Bangladesh on 66 for no loss after seven overs. “It’s been the story when we play India. “It was a great game, the crowd enjoyed and both teams enjoyed.
